Green isn't just the color of chlorophyll anymore. Today it's an adjective for economics. Green now colors the way many industries demonstrate sustainability and eco-awareness. And plants are at the root of the green movement, making our world both healthy and beautiful.

From greenhouses to gardens and laboratories to landscapes, a horticulture degree at Clemson blends science, business, artistry and communications to produce graduates who are highly marketable.

As a horticulture major, you might find yourself getting a little dirty in our expansive greenhouse complex as you learn about root physiology. You might choose to cultivate your knowledge of sustainable crop production at our student-run organic farm. Some of our students even branch out and discover the opportunities available in arboriculture through the extensive variety of tree species here on campus and in the S. Botanical Garden. Whether you are interested in growing your own business or developing drought-resistant plant cultivars, the courses you take as a horticulture major will prepare you well for a green future.

The degree curriculum is extremely flexible and allows you to select courses that fit your goals and interests. This flexibility is what separates Clemson's horticulture major from the competition. Freshman year, you'll be exposed to foundational science course work in biology and chemistry. These courses - along with math and English - build the foundation for upper-level classes in plant biology, landscape plants, plant propagation and soil science. The beauty of freshman year is that it isn't just general education.

The Intro to Horticulture class is a favorite among the students. With the flexible curriculum, you'll be able to choose from a long list of related course work that includes classes such as field botany, ecology, landscape design, turfgrass physiology, urban tree care, vegetable crops, genetics, insect diversity and plant disease.

In a major like horticulture, students must leave the confines of the classroom. The landscapes of Clemson's campus offer plant diversity, and professors utilize campus resources as well as the nearby South Carolina Botanical Garden, 17,acre Clemson Experimental Forest, Walker Golf Course and the arboretum.

This course is for students that wish to develop a deeper understanding of Horticultural practices. In this hour class we will study plant families in.


Horticulture involves the use of plants in residential and commercial situations. Horticulture professionals deal with all aspects of the growth, distribution, sale, installation and maintenance of ornamental plants. Classroom instruction and practical laboratory applications of horticultural principles and practices are included in the program of study. Course work includes plant science, plant identification and propagation, soils, fertilizers and pest management. Also included are courses in plant production, landscaping, and the management and operation of horticulture businesses. Sales associate in garden centers and nurseries, worker or supervisor in landscape installation and management companies, worker or supervisor in greenhouses and nurseries, landscape designer, worker or supervisor in public parks and gardens. An interest in plants, their care and use, good communication skills, a willingness to do manual labor, a willingness to learn to operate mechanical equipment.

Horticulture and Viticulture courses in Australia

The horticultural sector includes everything from plant care to landscape management. Our practical courses cover planting, propagating, irrigating, pruning, processing, and fertilising. Practise your horticulture skills in large grounds that include sprawling lawns, gardens, nurseries, and reclaimed forest parks. The horticulture industry is experiencing strong growth, with more than 50, job openings expected in nurseries and gardens across Australia over the next five years. An increased focus from both the public and private sector on horticultural biodiversity and sustainability is helping to drive this growth.

Landscape and Horticulture

Co-op programs are learning experiences where academic studies and work experience are integrated. Depending on the program, students may have one or more terms where they are working full-time in a co-op work term. Students must meet all eligibility criteria to participate in co-op. There is no guarantee of co-op employment as students are responsible for searching for and securing their co-op terms. Co-op fees apply. In the two-year Horticultural Industries Ontario College Diploma program you learn how to create landscapes from design to implementation. By offering a condensed format over 16 months, the Horticultural Industries program allows you to fast track your career.

At the NYBG students study both academic courses and field experience in aspects of horticulture. Graduates earn an AAS degree Horticulture from BCC. NYBG.

This course is recommended for individuals who are interested in pursuing garden design at garden centers, thinking of starting their own business in garden consulting, or wishing to create beautiful spaces in their own backyard. Students will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of design from evaluating and measuring properties to presenting completed designs. Some of the topics that we will explore will be design principles, choosing the right plant for the right place, landscape installation, developing a plant palette, creating gardens that attract pollinators, and incorporating natives, edible plants, and herbs into the landscape. In this six-week course, students will have the opportunity to complete and present a garden design project.

Successful completion of this program may enable graduates to continue their studies in a two-year Arborist Technician: Apprenticeship program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley.
